THE INITIATIVE

Begawan Biji started as an idea to build a cooking school for students in Begawan’s Learning Centre. The idea expanded to become a fully fledged destination restaurant, serving Mansur Rice and fresh produce from Begawan’s farm, and supporting Begawan’s work in community education. The restaurant was built to environmentally sustainable standards, and is surrounded by serene views of Begawan’s rice fields and farm.

The building ofBegawan Biji

The structure of Begawan Biji was designed by architect Conchita Blanco to resemble a Balinese wantilan, or open pavilion. Built from upcycled Kalimantan ironwood, Sumba sandstone, and Balinese bamboo, the restaurant blends beautifully into the natural surroundings.
